Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Employee-SelfServeCarpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a painful and progressive condition of the hand and arm. It causes numbness, tingling and other symptoms as a result of a pinched nerve in the wrist. A number of factors contribute to carpal tunnel, which may include anatomy of the wrist, certain underlying health problems and pattern of hand use.

It is estimated that almost 5 percent of women and 3 percent of men have carpal tunnel syndrome, and it is said to be one of the most common conditions affecting the nerves of the hands.

Minimize your risk with the following precautions

  • Exercising, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding smoking and controlling health conditions (i.e., arthritis and diabetes) can help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Arranging daily activities and workstation following ergonomic guidelines.
  • Using proper body alignment.
  • Evaluating daily routine for activities that increase risk of CTS.
  • Taking frequent breaks, stretching, changing positions or alternating with another activity.
